ASA Level 1 Swimming Teacher
This course is ideal for parents, teachers and swimmers wanting to assist the teaching of
swimming alongside an ASA teacher. The course is a mixture of theory lessons and practical teaching sessions with teachers, including lane coaching.

ASA Teachers Certificate NVQ
(Level 2, Units 1, 2, 3 and 4) – Swimming Teacher
Applicants should be at least 18 years old and be holders of a Level 1 or ASA Assistant Teacher
Certificate. A logbook containing signed confirmation of 15 hours’ assistance of qualified coach prior to the start of the course must be brought to the induction day.

Pool Lifeguard
Royal Life Saving Society RLSS - National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
This nationally recognised qualification is the minimum requirement for a career in lifeguarding.
Candidates must be good swimmers and will be tested for water competence on the first day of
the course. Suitable for sports centre staff, fitness club staff, youth leaders and coaches. The
qualification is valid for two years.
Applicants, prior to commencement of a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) course,
must be:
• 16 years of age prior to commencing a course of training
• Able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:
- Jump/dive into deep water
- Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
- In deep water, tread water for at least 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the floor of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits
Once a candidate has met these criteria, they may start their course of training. Training and
assessment for the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is in two units.
Applicants should be at least 16 years old and be strong competent swimmers.
